About this deal

The fungicide tebuconazole with trifloxystrobin (Provanto Fungus Fighter Plus, Toprose Fungus Control & Protect) has a recommendation for the control of leaf spots on ornamental plants. Additionally, the fungicides tebuconazole (Provanto Fungus Fighter Concentrate) and triticonazole (Fungus Clear Ultra) are labelled for the control of other diseases on ornamental plants, and could therefore be used legally on Cornus(at the owner’s risk) to try and control anthracnose.

Try to create an open environment – avoid overhanging plants (e.g. perennials next to a parterre) or plants that crowd around the sides of a box hedge Something else I like about Fungus Fighter Plus is that it’s safe to use around insects and other beneficial organisms, making it a safe choice that won’t disrupt your garden’s ecosystem. Fungus Fighter: at a glance Good where infection is severe but is in a position where you want totry to save thebox feature (e.g. part of a parterre) or where you do not wish to apply fungicides. This more drastic approach aims is to remove all infected tissues to maximise the chances of removing all inoculum.)If you’ve been gardening for any length of time, there’s a good chance you’ve heard of Provanto Fungus Fighter Plus. It’s one of the most talked-about plant protection products on the market, and it’s fast becoming a go-to tool among gardeners of all levels. Like most of you, I’m constantly battling with fungus on my plants, so this felt like the perfect time to put the hottest fungicide product to the test. How well did it perform? Do not over-fertilise (especially not too much nitrogen) as succulent growth is particularly susceptible Choose resistant species. The most susceptible species are Cornus florida and C. nuttallii and, to a possibly lesser extent, C. kousa. In studies in the USA, C. controversa and C. sericea were also susceptible. Native European Cornus species in the UK appear unaffected. There is currently insufficient information available for other species Prune shrubs to give an open structure (which will again improve air circulation and reduce humidity) Remove a layer of soil under the plants to get rid of infected leaf fragments. Replace with fresh soil (do not overfill)

Powdery mildew fungi produce microscopic air-borne dispersal spores from the fungal growth on the plant surface. These have an unusually high water content, enabling them to infect under drier conditions than most other fungal pathogens. Through the removal of infected stems and leaves and promptly burning them; hard pruning shoots and burning them; and use of organically acceptable sulphur. In addition, the following mixes have been found to be effective. Good where infection is very severe, the box is not of high value, or it threatens other box plantings.)Baking soda and vinegar – a mixture of 1.5 tablespoons of baking soda, 1.5 tablespoons of hand soap, 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil, 1 tablespoon of vinegar, and 1 gallon of water can kill the fungus on roses by altering its pH. Apply a fertiliser (general-purpose or one developed for box) in spring or summer to help plants recover from the stress of leaf loss Cut out a little more than you think is necessary as some infections are likely to be latent (not yet visible)

Always settle for a fungicide that matches your specific needs. And when applying, follow the instructed procedure and follow all the laid out precautions. Obviously, don’t go spraying fungicides near streams or ponds, unless it’s labelled for such use. However, when dealing with the need to stop or slow down a fungal infection; you’re better off settling for a fungicide with more curative properties regardless of its protection period. That’s following the short application interval that overrides the need for long-term protection.

Is Provanto Fungus Fighter Plus safe to use around beneficial insects and other beneficial organisms?

Bayer Fungus Fighter Plus and Bayer Fungus Fighter Concentrate have label recommendations for box blight and can be applied up to six times per year. If treatment is needed in spring, consider saving some applications in case it recurs in the autumn. Triticonazole (Fungus Clear Ultra) is labelled for the control of other diseases on ornamentals and could therefore be used legally on box (at the owner's risk) to try and control box blight. Follow label instructions for use (avoid spraying when rain is expected, but also in bright sunshine or when plants are dry at the roots). Be sure to follow the outlined instructions from the manufacturer to the letter, including how and when to use the fungicide. For instance, if it’s recommended for use between March and September; or whether it needs to be applied using a clean garden pressure sprayer. Pros
