So, all in all, I'd say that, although it is not quite my favourite GCSE text, I do still adore it and I think that everyone should give it a go. Mrs Belander: Francis's landlady. She feels sympathy towards Francis, as he is a veteran and is the person who inadvertently reveals that Larry LaSalle has returned to Frenchtown. The smartest witch around, Hermione Granger is constantly saving the day and is a wonderful female role model. The book is essentially a short story collection with some connections showing up between the stories. Just like the last time around, I had trouble remembering all the names and relationships. Truth be told, though, this time I didn't try particularly hard. And I think, ultimately, this approach was beneficial to my enjoyment of the book. Frankly, I had a great time. This pressure utterly destroyed Francis’ mental health, as he grew depressed and suicidal- wanting to jump off the roof of a church, but ultimately stopped because he considered it cowardice. Remember when I said Francis almost sacrificed his life, fell onto a grenade, and tried to “shield” his comrades from a grenade explosion? After learning about the exploits of the Primordial Beings and Olympian Gods in Mythos, we now follow their mortal offspring, the Great Greek Heroes. The GI Bill is mentioned in the text in regards to the later plans of the veterans, which they discuss in the St Jude Club. Joe LaFontaine speaks about how the government would be willing to pay for his college education and intends to become a teacher. However, the positive outlook is shown to be false, as the veterans are later presented as pessimistic people, especially Arthur Rivier, who struggles to cope with not talking about the war.Cormier's writing is beautiful and an important tool in conveying all that he wanted to. The quotes are lovely, and sometimes heartbreaking, but all of them memorable, which is the critical thing when you need them for an exam. Remarkable amongst such modern connections was the story of Chris Benoit as a real-life example of what Herakles did.

In Heroes: The Greek Myths Reimagined, Stephen Fry’s retelling of the timeless tales of the “heroes", we learn about the origins, quests, triumphs and legacies of Perseus, Heracles, Bellerophon, Orpheus, Jason, Oedipus and Atalanta. The stories of Atalanta, the only female among the heroes and that of Bellephoron were completely new for me and I enjoyed them thoroughly. The Labors of Heracles and the story of Jason and the Argonauts were my personal favorites. I particularly enjoyed getting to know more about the mythical creatures the heroes go up against. Stephen Fry’s characteristic humor and wit render this an informative, entertaining and engaging read. Francis is plagued by the fact that he couldn’t stop his then-girlfriend, Nicole Renard from getting raped by Larry LaSalle. After focusing on the gods in Mythos, he now turns his attention to the mortal heroes. The stories of Perseus, Heracles and his twelve labours, Bellerophon and Pegasus, Orpheus being an idiot, Jason and the Argonauts, Atalanta (not the football club but the only female hero in this book), Oedipus and some hilarious (and tragic) misunderstandings, Theseus.

Guy Montag is a firefighter in a futuristic town where they burn books. Questioning the “anti-intellectual” society around him lands him a spot on our list! Each individual story is paced nicely, and all three intertwine, all the pieces coming together to form the picture that is Francis' life. Also, this second book felt more organized than Mythos. Instead of a series of small, independent chapters, each hero has a series of chapters covering all the highlight from each of their journeys. This added a much needed continuity compared to Mythos, and made the reading experience better in my opinion. Aside from that change, you'll find everything you loved about Mythos remain same here. And isn't that why we love Fry? Oh, and the tellings of these Heroes are quite vivid, uncomplicated, and evocative.

Just like 'Of Mice and Men', I thought that 'Heroes' was very clever, and it became more so to me the more times I read it. It was less the actual content, but the structure that made it so. There was the story of Francis's childhood, and his escapades with Larry and Nicole, his experiences in the war, and finally, his post-war life, hiding from the world and waiting for his enemy to come home.

Greek mythology is full of so many strange stories and strange people. It’s so rich and wonderful and I really do love reading about it, but it needs detail. Stephen Fry has attempted to make Ancient Greek heroes accessible to readers unfamiliar with them, though all the stories are very, very, brief and it’s their downfall. The novel has a very complicated outlook on heroism and what defines a hero. Francis is considered to be a hero as his actions during the war saved the lives of others, but the reader is asked to consider if cowardly actions can result in heroic consequences. Home sweet home: Monument was modeled on Cormier’s hometown of Leominster, and Frenchtown the French Hill section of town in which Cormier grew up.
